28 SEPT – BITOU RIVER LODGE
5 OCT – KWENDALO
by Dr. Mark Brown from Discover Eden
Join us at the Bitou Birding Festival for a fascinating and educational experience led by Dr. Mark Brown, Conservation Director at Discover Eden. This activity offers a unique opportunity to witness bird netting, ringing, recording, and release firsthand. Dr. Brown, one of South Africa’s most experienced bird ringers, with around 30,000 birds ringed, will also give some insights on bird ringing and its importance in ornithological research during the demonstration.
Bird ringing is a vital tool ornithologists use to study wild bird populations. It is conducted by trained, licensed professionals with permits from landowners and conservation authorities. This meticulous process helps gather crucial data on bird movements, lifespan, and population dynamics, contributing significantly to bird conservation efforts.
Join us at Bitou River Lodge on the 28th of September and at Kwendalo on the 5th of October and learn about the invaluable work of bird ringing while enjoying the serene surroundings and abundant birdlife. Don’t miss this chance to deepen your understanding of bird conservation and research from one of the country’s leading experts.
PLEASE NOTE: Spaces for the bird netting and ringing demonstrations are limited to max. 20 people per location.
